Joint Area H3 and H4 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest (19th September 2010)

On 19th September 2010, Area H3 and H4 had a joint Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest which took place at Safira Country Club. This contest gathered all the champion and 1^st runner up of Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest in Club level. For Area H3, the club that are competing consists of Bagan Ajam Toastmasters Club and BM Big Foot Toastmasters Club. For Area H4, the representatives are from MEF Toastmasters Club (Celine and Sree) , Seberang jaya Toastmasters Club and Team Flantech Toastmasters Club.

Joint MEF Toastmasters club and Seberang Jaya Toastmasters Club Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest (2nd September 2010)

On 2 September 2010, MEF Toastmasters Club and Seberang Jaya Toastmasters Club had a joint Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest which took place at Safira Country Club.

This time, we are proud to have 6 contestants for Humorous Speech Contest. John, Yan Ting and Jeff are new in Toastmasters and we are really admiring their courage in taking part in this competition. The contestants and their speech title are as below:

Highlight 2 : Award Presentation

Toastmaster of the Year should be someone who has contributed to the quality of club in some significant way. This can be accomplished by being the "spark" in the meetings, demonstrating great personal growth, acting as an exemplary leader, volunteerism, going the "extra mile" and consistently contributing to a positive, supportive, encouraging club atmosphere.

Division S & H Joint Installation Dinner 2010!! - Part 1

On 21st August 2010, a large group of 14 energetic members from MEF Toastmasters Club have attended the Joint Installation Dinner (JID) held at Eastin Hotel. The dinner themed “Scarf Night” made everyone dress gorgeously with their scarf, and this made every individual extraordinary.

We feel great as all the EXCO members which include TM YS Lee (Area Governor H4) , TM Kenny (Ass Div Gov of Marketing and IPP), TM Celine (President), TM Judy (VPE), TM Fion (VPPR) , TM Sok Koon (VPM), TM Jeff (Treasurer), TM Mei Yee (Secretary) and TM Felix (SAA) attended this grand dinner. We also have some existing member such as TM Sam,TM MC Liu and TM Andrew and active new members such as TM Yan Ting, TM Low Wei Yik attended together with us, making MEF Toastmaster Club one of the biggest group attending the dinner.

The dinner starts with an opening dance from the emcee of the night. The emcee in that night was non other than our MEF Toastmasters Club president, TM Celine Choy and TM Justin, VPE from Seberang Jaya Toastmasters Club.

It seems like both of them have been practicing hard for the opening dance.

TM Celine and TM Justin is finally on the stage welcoming all the Toasmasters and guests.

Q&A session with DTM Charles Tan Chia Lih

Sometimes we are too worried to give feedback to people who are superior than us in terms of status, knowledge, position etc. How do we overcome the worries?

Recently we have received some questions from members and non members in regard to the importance of "how to become an effective evaluator". We are honoured to have DTM Charles Tan Chia Lih (also the speaker of "Evaluate to Motivate" workshop) to answer the questions below before the workshop takes place on 1st August 2010.

Q1. Can anyone of us give effective feedback or evaluation in our own profession?

Feedback is good only if it can be provided immediately and if it provides suggestions for improvement.

Example of feedback: You should do a better presentation.

Example of effective feedback: If you can insert two graphs, it will make the presentation easier to understand. Besides that, I feel that you neglected the right side of the crowd. If possible, try to cover the whole room.

Thus, for any profession at all, effective feedback is necessary.

Example for Engineer:

Engineering Manager: You must ensure the machine does not breakdown!

With this type of feedback, nothing gets done and the engineer would also be demotivated.

A better one: It is okay to be slow and steady because once you setup the machine properly, it will run smoothly. Besides, this allows you to focus on more value added duties and establish yourself as a specialist.

This cannot happen overnight but if you know the techniques you may start to practice and soon, everyone can provide effective evaluations.

Q2. If we are not born naturally as an effective evaluator. Can this skill be taught or trained?

Many say, leaders are born but the truth is, majority of leaders are made. An effective evaluator is the one who is able to effectively provide positive and pro-active feedback and these can only be obtained through constant practice. There are some managers whom you like very much and there are some who appear to be always picking on you for all the faults but has never tried to help out. These habits can change if only they learn that effective evaluation is much more useful than just common fault finding feedback.

Q3. Can you please share with us how you benefits of becoming an effective evaluator in your daily life?

If you are an effective evaluator, you would find that in your work, everything and everyone seems to like to be part of your team. Somehow, any project given to you will be successful versus another manager who simply is unable to give effective evaluation / feedback. As a husband, you will find that your wife would also understand you more!

Q4. Sometimes we are too worried to give feedback to people who are superior than us in terms of status, knowledge, position etc. How do we overcome the worries?

The truth is, IF we are able to listen well and provide feedback with tangible evidence to our superiors, they would treat us as their equal and would want to share with us even more.

When I just joined my organization, I listened to my Vice President's press conference. It was riddled with too many 'You know'. I wrote an email to him and said, 'Dear XXX, I must say that in terms of knowledge about the industry, you are way ahead than many. However, there were just too many 'you know' that made your presentation lose some of its effectiveness. '

My VP listened to the video himself and called me and said, 'Thank you. I will try to reduce this. If you find this again in future, please remind me. Really appreciate this'.

I was just a new and junior staff giving REAL FEEDBACK to my VP! Many would say, this is suicidal. But let me assure you, if the feedback is done correctly, it enhances not just you but everyone around you.

Q5. How Toastmaster can train us in becoming a better evaluator or effective in giving feedback?

Practice, Practice, Practice. Listen, Listen, Listen. Learn from the best in Toastmasters, improve ourselves and soon, we would see that we are improving a lot. Even colleagues who seldom talk to us now seemed to be one of our good friends in the company!

The meeting on 6th May 2010 was run by TOE, Celine Choy, CC and her team.

On this day there is 2 assignment speakers which is TM Fion who is attempting her CC8 and Kenny Lee, CC, ALB who is presenting his ACB project 5.

Beside of our regular visiting toastmaster, Justin, CC of Seberang Jaya Toastmasters, the meeting was amazed by 2 Area Governors who turn up that night to be evaluators for the assingment speakers. They are Erik Ooi, Area Governor of S8 and Yew Jin, Area Governor of S7.

Of course there is 2 guests came to the meeting too. They are Yan Ting, sister of TM Yan Ying and Ms. Mei Yee who is interested to join Toastmasters.

Congratulation to IPP YS Lee for completed and achieved his Advance Leader Bronze (ALB). He completed her ALB project at 28th April , 2010.

YS Lee, ACB, ALB was President for MEF club on the term of 2008~2009 and under his leadership, the club achieved Presiden Distinguished status.

As a IPP for term 2009~2010, he also support the current office in many ways to ensure the club run healthily. So far with his support, the current office had achieved Select Distinguished status and working towards President Distinguished goal.

Again, congrats to YS Lee, ACB, ALB for his achievement.

MEF won 2nd Runner Up in Area S8 International Speech & Table Topic Contest

On 14th March 2010, 3 clubs of Area S8 consists of MEF toastmaster Club, Seberang Jaya Toastmaster Club and Team Flantech Toastmaster Club gathered together to participate in the Area level International Speech & Table Topic contests .

After 2 hour of contest, there comes the result and 2 contestants from MEF won the 2nd runner in both contests.

Celine Choy, CC won 2nd runner in the International Speech contest while Kenny Lee, CC, ALB won 2nd runner up in Table Topic contest.

Congratulation to both winners for this great achievement !

Chinese New Year Themed Meeting

On 25th February, while it is still in Chinese New Year, MEF have a special meeting where it was a CNY themed meeting.

The meeting was run in a very unique way where there is only game session, table topic session and makan session.

Beside of MEF members, there is also visiting toastmasters and some of MEF old members turn up to support the meeting.

Joint International Speech Contest and Table Topic Contest 2010

On the 2nd Feb 2010, MEF TMC and Seberang Jaya TMC had organized a Joint International Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest at Safira Club. Around 50 people has turned up for this event.

Speech contest are important part of the Toastmasters International education programme. Speech contest provide an opportunity for proficient speakers to gain contest experience, and they provide interesting educational programmes for members and the public. They also allow those Toastmasters who are not participating in the contest to learn by observing proficient speakers.

The result of the competition are as below:

A) International Speech contest

B) Table Topic Contest

MEF TMC achieved Distinguish Club level

Information about the qualification needed to achieve it is as below:

Distinguished Club Program

Toastmasters International's Distinguished Club Program/Club Success Plan focuses on Club education and membership growth. All Clubs are automatically considered in the Distinguished Club Program, which begins July 1st and ends the following June 30th. Progress is tracked at World Headquarters based on information submitted by the Clubs.

10 Goals

1. Two CCs
2. Two more CCs
3. One ACB, ACS, or ACG
4. One more ACB, ACS, or ACG
5. One CL, AL, or DTM
6. One more CL, AL, or DTM
7. Four new members
8. Four more new members
9. Minimum four officers trained each training period
10. One semi and one officer list submitted on time

Membership Requirement:

At year-end a club must have At least 20 members, or a Net growth of at least five new members

Clubs that meet the membership requirement and do the following earn recognition:

- Achieve 5 of 10 goals achieves Distinguished Club

- Achieve 7 of 10 goals achieves Select Distinguished Club

- Achieve 9 of 10 goals achieves President's Distinguished Club

Just for general sharing, MEF TMC is one of the 5 clubs who achieved it on the second term.

MEF Attended TLI2 with full attendance !

On 6th December, 2009, 7 officers of MEF TMC participated in the Toastmasters Learning Institute 2 (TLI2) in Intel PG12 with full attendance of 7 club officers.

TLI is important for club officers to learn new skill so that they can grow & develop the club better. In addition, it is also important for club officers to attend as it contribute 1 (Distinguished Club Program) point to the club.

By attending 2 TLI with at least 4 officers turn up, MEF successfully earn the 1 DCP point but must important is we believe that all of us learn a lot in the training and managed to have some fellowship with officers of Div S & N.

A Brand New District 51 Website

While many of us thought the District website was "abandon" for quite some time since there is no new updates, the webmasters and his team is actually preparing a suprise to all of us.

We would like to congratulate our President of MEF, TM Kenny Lee for completing his Advanced Leader Bronze(ALB) yesterday,19 Nov 2009 during our meeting!! Thumb up for him!! We are proud of you !

As we know, Toastmaster International Education Programme consists of Communication Track and Leadership track. For TM Kenny to complete his ALB, he needs to fulfilled the following requirement:-

Achieved Competent Leader (CL) award;
Achieved Competent Communicator (CC) award (or achieved Competent Toastmaster CTM award);
Served at least six months as a club officer (president, vice president education, vice president membership, vice president public relations, secretary, treasurer or sergeant at arms) and participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office.
While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program; and
Conducted any two programs from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series.

The journey in Toastmaster is challenging yet beneficial. His achievement today does not only make him a better leader, but, at the same time, it serves as a motivator to encourage all the MEF members to be like him one day.

We believe that with his passion in Toastmaster journey, his dream to become a Distinguish Toastmaster will become a reality one day...

A Meeting With Suprise

Here comes 5th November 2009 , a day for all MEF members to gather again and grow. We were surprised to have Distinguish Toastmaster and also Immediate Past Division S Governor Charles Tan visiting us for the first time!!! As a DTM, he gave us a lot of encouragement and motivation. Definitely, we learnt a lot from him.

In this meeting, it was very interesting to have a theme about "Halloween". TM Judy, the TOE for the first time asked everyone of us to introduce ourself and asked us to imagine the type of sttire we would like to dress in if we were to go to a Halloween party.. Wow.... our DTM would not want to be other than a man with black suit,imitating a lawyer... Simple yet extraordinary, right? A great warm up for the brain to be imaginative...

IPP YS Lee shared some messages about the President Distinguished Club award where under his leadership, MEF achieved 9 DCP goals. We are hoping that in this new term, MEf will have the same or better achievement. Yes, we believe we can!!!!!!!!

Sometimes, things are unexpected. Our light for the timer to use had broken down. here come the hero,TM Christopher Choog who was try to fix the plug ...Toastmaster is flooded with multi- talented people.

Dinner Gathering 291009

Toastmasters provide not only a platform to learn communication and leadership skill but it is also a platform for people to build friendship.

In order to strengthen the bond among the members as well as regular guest and visiting toastmasters from other club, a dinner was organized by VPPR, TM Peijun on 29th October 2009 in Tambun Restaurant where nice seafood was served.

A total of 19 people joined this dinner. Beside of MEF club members, there were members from Seberang Jaya TMC & Butterworth TMC join in too. We have also friends which is very close to MEF join us as well.

Some members continue the event by going for some beer time after dinner and it was a wonderful moment for all members.

MEF Welcomes New Member - Steve Chiam !

To our surprise, this meeting was full of enthusiastic club members!!!!. We could see that most of the new members of this term like TM Boon Khai, TM Steve Chiam, TM Jinggle and TM Celine had been actively taking up role players of the meeting and the remaining one like TM Albert ,TM June, TM Fion and TM MC Liu continued their assignment speech .

Congratulations to them for starting their journey in Toastmaster. They are so great and full of courage, and that is the spirit we want !!

In addition, we also had a new member induction session to recognize our new member, TM Steve Chiam officially in MEF Toastmaster Club. He joined us after 2 visits as a guest to MEF. TM Steve Chiam, we welcome to this big family!!!!! Glad to have you here…

MEF achieved Smedley Award 2009~2010

For the first time in MEF history, the club achieved Smedley Award and this is another great news after achieving 3 DCP goals in only 3rd month of the term !

Smedley Award is an award given away to the Toastmaster Club when the club has fulfilled the listed criteria in the membership programme of Toastmaster International. The criteria is a club must has added five new, dual or reinstated members during the months of August and September.

Up to date, MEF has welcomed 9th new member into the club already.

Bravo to the club for another great achievement !

Another Fun Meeting in MEF !

We have proven that learning can be fun in a way.We just had a good LAUGHTER in todays meeting. It was fun, memorable, positive and encouraging. At the same time, we still managed to learn from each other.

Today,we are proud to have different members taking up chances and started their journey in Toastmaster to learn something new in each meeting. Many members in MEF begun to take up different role in this meeting and many of them were actually the first timer for the role!!!! Guest what??? They did very well !!
